  Self Assignments

Setting yourself self-assignments is a way of keeping the creating flame glowing. It does not matter if the assignments are long term, short term or never ending providing that you have a genuine interest in them. By working on these projects you force yourself to look at the world in a different way which can mean that you make images that you would not normaly create.

The photo above is part of my 'Waste' series. I am sure that I would not have taken the photograph if I did not have this project in mind. You can see more of the images in this series here. Currently my other projects include 'Energy', 'Decay' and 'Water'.

  End of Summer

I've just come back from the Isle of Wight. It seems clear that the Sumer Season has not been what the island's traders would have hoped for. There are several places that are 'Closed For The Winter'! The weather earlier in the season probably persuaded many visitors to go abroad for their holiday.

  The Opening of the Sunflower

The weather here today we very wet. We even had a thunder storm. However, there was one bright spot - a sunflower opening up to the world. I managed to snap in in a rare sunny spell.

Update: I am pleased to see that this image has generated a great deal of interest. I would like to remind everyone that if you would like to use this or any image from my site then you need my permission. The easiest way is to licence the image from Alamy, who will charge you a reasonable rate for your use. You can see the image on Alamy from this link.

  Bark!

The texture of tree bark can be a great source for close-up material, especially if the bark is covered in lichen. This photo shows the bark of a rown tree with its own residents.

The photo was taken with my Konica Minolta Dimage A2. The company has stopped manufacturing cameras and it is unlikely that a true successor to the A2 will be produced by any manufacturer. It has an excellent 28-200mm lens (35mm eqv) with a useable macro facility. In good light the image quality from it is very good - certainly good enough for the Alamy agency that I contribute to. In fact it is a great all in one picture making tool. I sometimes reach for it in preference to my DSLR.

  Mandolin Player

I have wanted to get myself a madolin for a very long time. Recently I took the plunge and bought one. Here's a self-portrait of me playing it.

  Sunflower

This is the first sunflower that my boys have grown this year - very exciting for them!

I wanted the flower to stand out from the background so I darkened the background a little. First I had to make a selection to isolate the flower. I did this using the 'Color Range' tool in the 'Select' menu in Photoshop. This is a little used tool that is well worth experimenting with, especially if you have an odd shaped area of a similar colour to select.

  Evening Shoot

I was out shooting this evening in West Wiltshire. The light was singularly uncooperative but I used to the time to check on some locations for when the light is better. So my time was not entirely wasted. As I was driving home, the sun appeared from behind the cloud it had been hiding behind - what a change. Shortly afterwards I saw an old iron fence between the road and a field. I've seen this fence countless times before, but never like this! By the time I realised that there was a photo to grab I had passed the spot and had to turn round. Anyway, to cut a long story short, here's the shot. I love this type of image where it is made entirely by the lighting. In most other conditions there is no worthwhile image there. I think my evening was well spent.
