  Portrait or Landscape

A few years ago I was involved in producing a book about the town where I lived at the time.  I was lucky enough to have my work published in the book but I was frustrated because I knew that more of my photos could have been included if I has thought harder about how my images could be used at the taking stage.  I realised that before I release the shutter I have to think about how the photo might end up being used.  The biggest lesson was to realise that when editors create pages - both on the web and in print - they have to think about the overall layout of the page.  Sometimes they will need a landscape image and sometimes a portrait version.  My biggest mistake all those years ago was to make the best photograph whether it was portrait or landscape and only shoot that version, these days I shoot both.  That way, if an editor likes my work they can choose which version will fit their page.

  Dinner!

I was doing some jobs in my garden this moring when I saw a spider and a fly.  The fly had been trapped in the spider's web and had been entombed in the spider's silk, poor thing.  I'm not sure whether the spider was finishing the process or starting lunch.

As some of you will know, if you have been following my blog for a while, I have a soft spot for spiders and I always call them Boris, here's why!

  Goin'Fishin'?

I visited Lyme Regis in Dorset earlier this week.  It is rightly known as a pretty seaside town with the Cobb, made famous by its appearance in the film of 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'.  But the people of the town still have to make a living.  Tourism is a vital industry but the town has been a fishing port for hundreds of years with some fishing boats still calling and others taking advantage of the tourist trade with day trips for leisure anglers.

  Weymouth 2012

The venerable seaside resort of Weymouth in Dorset feels a little different because this summer as it is hosting the sailing events of the London 2012 Olympics. Besides the ticketed area on the Nothe, there are big screens on the beach which anyone can watch. Certainly, it is worth being in the town and being part of the Olympic experience.

Of course, more traditional seaside entertainments are still available, such as Punch and Judy.
